Who is She?
'I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.'
Anne Frank

A denotative analysis of this image tells us little about the subject. The hairstyle and fine facial features suggest that this is a young girl. Her dark hair may indicate that she may originate from Europe. The cut of her clothing and the grainy black and white image also indicate that this photograph may have been taken in the 1940's.

However, this denotative analysis does not do justice to the girl who has been described as a 'very strong and brave person' (Berenhaun 1990).

This image may be ‘interpreted from a multiplicity of different perspectives’ (Pink 2001). This site examines the biography of the subject, the context of this image and the personal significance this image holds for me. In doing so, it will be demonstrated that one image may transcend its origional meaning and instead may represent much more.
